In the context of the Quadruple Aim in healthcare, workplace violence is closely tied to the fourth aim, which focuses on improving the well-being of healthcare providers. Workplace violence, including physical or verbal aggression, harassment, and intimidation directed towards healthcare workers, directly impacts their well-being and contributes to burnout, stress, and decreased job satisfaction.
Addressing workplace violence is essential for achieving the fourth aim of enhancing provider well-being.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) considers workplace violence a widespread problem across all industries, but the agency says workers in healthcare face unique safety risks and that an OSHA standard focusing on violence in healthcare facilities is in the works.
In this Feb. 29 fireside chat, Hector Alvarez, MSPSY, CTM, president of Alvarez Associates, discessed the issues that healthcare facilities must address to keep patients and staff safe from violence. In addition, he explained how California’s new workplace violence prevention law could prove influential if other states follow suit.
